Sodalite, var. Hackmanite, Davis Quarry, Bancroft, Canada

Chris Clemens

This blocky specimen of hackmanite is from the Davis Quarry, Bancroft, Ontario, Canada. Under long wave UV it shows a bright, saturated, orange fluorescent response. It is also moderately fluorescent under short wave UV, responding with a dimmer magenta/blue glow. There is also an unidentified cream-colored mineral present as patches on one surface of this specimen, possibly aragonite, that fluoresces blue/white under both wavelengths. The size of this specimen is 8.3 x 3.4 x 2.5 cm, and it weighs 97 grams.
